Long in pre-production/development, Variety reports that the long-awaited Ghostbusters animated series on Netflix has been given a green light, and is moving into full production.
The series was originally announced on Ghostbusters Day at the 2022 Ecto-Fest, without many details aside from the series navigating an unexplored era of the Ghostbusters canon. Variety learned through their sources that a new showrunner has been attached to the project, Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show, Mystery Science Theater 3000) as writer and executive producer. Kalan’s addition to the project should immediately get fans excited, as he has a long background of writing sharp comedy as a head writer for The Daily Show and the humorous side of long-standing lore in writing for Marvel (Spider-Man/Deadpool, Wolverine, among others) and DC Comics. Netflix undoubtedly has faith in Kalan after delivering 25 episodes of the most-recent MST3K iteration for the streaming platform.
Variety also says, the series will be 3D animated, with a tone similar to the most recent two films. Which makes a whole lot of sense, given that it’s easily assumed Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will be close and providing a guiding hand to Kalan and any of the writing staff on-board, and also serving as Executive Producers.
Sony and Ghost Corps setting sights on an animated episodic series as their next project makes a whole lot of sense, following in step with the release of The Real Ghostbusters in 1986 - just two years after the original film’s release - to fill the undetermined amount of time between live-action films in the franchise.
It should also be noted that Sony and Netflix did not comment for the Variety reporting, and this is not an official announcement from either studio.
